Stanley Ray Schwien, 68, of Russell, Kansas, died Thursday, March 12, 2020 at his home in Russell surrounded by his loving wife of 41 years and eldest son.

Stan was born into the Schwien family June 16, 1951 in Russell to Leonard “Larry” Schwien and Norma Jean (Boxberger) Schwien. He grew up in rural Russell and attended Lincoln Elementary School, graduated from Russell High School and attended two years at Barton County Community Collage. He was also a graduate of Tulsa Oklahoma’s Oil and Gas Development and later took classes on reading 3-D images of oil and gas.

Stan met his wife Fonna at the Veterinary Clinic where she worked. He and his father came in to purchase some vet supplies, for his cattle. His Dad wouldn’t leave him alone until he asked her to dinner. They were united in marriage one year after they met, on April 14, 1979 at Natoma United Methodist church. He was a trucker in his early years and then ranched, finished cattle, and farmed until his death. He dedicated his life to learning and was an insatiable reader. He enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal, many newspapers, and later online when the Internet was an option. At a young age he loved to sit on oilrigs, watch them drill and learn from the geologists. In his spare time he enjoyed classic cars, trucks, and farm machinery. Stan always had a joke to brighten your day. When the grandchildren were born he enjoyed spending all the time he could with them. The highlight of the year would be when he took the grandkids on vacation.

He is survived by his wife Fonna, 2 sons Sheldon R and Scott R Schwien of Russell; 3 sisters Marcie, Belinda, and Brenda; and 3 grandchildren:  Seth, Ava, and Sage. His male descendants have the same initials as himself and his grandfather Sigmund Schwien. He was preceded in death by his brother Stewart, his parents, and best friend “Mac”.

He was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell.

A memorial service to celebrate Stanley’s Life will be held at a later undetermined date at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell with Pastor Mike Ketchens Officiating. The family has selected cremation and an inurnment of the ashes will take place at a later date.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the memorial service arrangements.
