Ramon Lee Laurie, 77, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.
Ramon was born on November 30, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Loran Clyde and Hazel Lucile (Brashear) Laurie. He grew up in the Derby, Kansas, area and graduated from Derby Senior High School. After high school he attended Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, working towards his electrical engineering degree. After completing Army ROTC, Ramon quit college to serve his country as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. He was married to Judith Ann Sanders on May 17, 1982 in Hays. They raised 4 children Doug, Angela, Peter and Reece. Ramon became a self-employed electrician in 1974 as the owner and operator of Laurie Electric, and retired in 2010. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Post #6240, and the American Legion Post #99 all in Russell, Kansas. He was a member of the Kansas Horse Council. He is retired from being a longtime volunteer for the Russell-Grant Fire Department. He enjoyed horseback riding, hunting, and fishing. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, and his horses.
Surviving family include his wife Judy of the home, his mother Hazel Laurie (101 years old) of Coffeeville, Kansas; son Doug Montalvo and wife Penny of Troy, Texas, daughter Angela Laurie Wyan and husband Donald of Salina, Kansas; sons Peter Laurie and wife Stacey of Russell, Kansas and Reece Laurie and wife Erin of Ottawa, Kansas; sister Lorene Richardson and husband Cohen of Coffeeville, Kansas; 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and infant brother George Earl Laurie.
Cremation has been selected by the family. A memorial celebration of Ramon’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, February 04, 2022, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, February 03, 2022 at the mortuary, with the family present to greet guests from 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. Thursday evening. Memorials may be given to the Kansas Horse Council, Inc. and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
