Vernon R. “Bob” Waugh

Vernon Robert “Bob” Waugh, Jr. of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Kansas Soldiers’ Home in Ft. Dodge, Kansas.

Bob was born on May 27, 1953, in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Vernon Robert, Sr. and Mary H. (Glenn) Waugh.  He grew up in Dighton, Kansas, and graduated from Dighton High School in the class of 1973.  After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corp.  He moved to Russell, Kansas, in 1981, and worked at the Russell City Power plant.  He worked as a power plant operator for 15 years and worked for the Russell City Police for 6 years working over 20 years for the City of Russell.  He was a longtime member of the Calvary Chapel Assembly of God Church in Russell and a member of the First Congregational Church in Russell.  He was a member of the National Rifle Association and American Hunting Club.  He was a biology nut researching in his private time and enjoyed working with microscopes.  He also enjoyed shooting sports and gardening. 

He is survived by one brother, Brian Waugh, Sr. of Garden City, Kansas; and four sisters, Sally Waugh of Dighton, Kansas; Veronica Kennon (Blake Holloway) of Chandler, Texas; Christina Kerls of Topeka, Kansas; and Amanda Darcy (J.R.) of Spearville, Kansas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews: Jerry, Alex, Brian Jr., William, Trisha, Hunter, Brady, Harley, Adler, Evan, Noah, Harry, Emma Lee, Avery, Blake, Paislee, Paxton, and Justin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon Robert “Bob” Waugh, Sr. and Mary Waugh, and by his brother Jack Waugh and sister Mary Lou Waugh.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at the First Congregational Church in Russell, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating.  A graveside service and burial will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday afternoon, June 22, 2023, at the Dighton Cemetery in Dighton, Kansas.  Military honors will be presented by the Dighton American Legion and United States Marine Corp.  Visitation will be from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P. M. Wednesday evening.  Memorials may be given to the Russell County Veterans Memorial and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
