Joyce Irene (Anschutz) Cobb-Barker, 87, of McPherson, Kansas and formerly of Russell, Kansas passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Joyce was born March 19, 1936 in Hays, Kansas. She was the daughter of Louis and Vivian (Thielen) Anschutz. She grew up in Dorrance, Kansas and graduated from Dorrance High School in the Class of 54.
Joyce was united in marriage to Denis Cobb on September 4, 1954 in Russell. This union was blessed with three children; Mitchell, Curtis and Laura. They made their home in Russell. Denis preceded her in death on June 4, 1994. Later Joyce was united in marriage to Charles Barker in June of 1997 in Great Bend, Kansas. Charles preceded her in death in March of 2019.
Joyce was a devoted wife and homemaker for her children. She also worked at the Russell State Bank, later known as UMB Bank, for over 22 years before retiring. When she was younger and helping Denis with the harvest crews, she would cook their meals and deliver them to the fields from Temple, Oklahoma to Lemmon, South Dakota. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Russell. In her spare time, she enjoyed painting with acrylics and oils, and sewing.
Joyce’s surviving family include her son, Mitchell Cobb and companion Bev Hartsook of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Laura Hrabe and husband Shane of McPherson, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Ava Bustad of Stanwood, Washington; brother, Norman Anschutz (Barbara) of Russell, Kansas; sisters, Ellen Spaulding (Mark) of Andover, Kansas and Eileen Keenan (Dennis) of Overland Park, Kansas; five grandchildren, Michelle Hayes, Justin Cobb, Kellie Steinle, Lindsay Abrahams and Matt Hrabe; and five great grandchildren, Adalynne Hayes, Kyle Steinle, Claytin Steinle, Jase Abrahams and Ellis Abrahams; and many nieces and nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Denis Cobb and Charles Barker; and son, Curtis Cobb.
Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 29, 2023 at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. A Vigil and Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM, Wednesday at the Mortuary. A Memorial has been established with St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
