Leonard E. Shannon

Leonard E. Shannon, 95, of Russell, Kansas, died on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Homestead Assisted Living Center in Russell.

Leonard was born on March 29, 1929, in Ellsworth, Kansas, the son of Edmond L. and Ollie (Weinhold) Shannon.  He grew up in Dorrance, Kansas and graduated from Dorrance High School.  He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Dolores D. Major on October 09, 1955 in Russell.  From this union Leonard and Dolores were blessed with two children Randall and Lenette.  Leonard was owner and operator of Shannon’s Appliance opening his Russell store in the early 1950’s.   He was a longtime member of the Otterbein Methodist Church, Russell Kiwanis Club, Russell Elks Lodge and Good Sams.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, ice hockey, Kansas City Chief’s football, playing dominoes and going to the Russell Senior Center. 

Surviving family include his wife Dolores of Russell, Kansas; son Randall E. Shannon and wife JoDee of Wichita, Kansas and daughter Lenette D. Swaim and husband David of Port St. Lucie, Florida; brother Loren Shannon and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three grandchildren Hayley Shannon, Brittany Swaim and Brandon Swaim and one great grandchild Jerrick Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Shannon, sister Merlyn Shannon and infant brother Raymond Shannon.

A celebration of Leonard’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, October 03, 2024, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.  A burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, October 02, 2024, at the mortuary, with Family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Wednesday evening.  Memorials may be given to the Otterbein Methodist Church or Russell Senior Center and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
