Doris Parks Elder, 96, of Russell and former Ottawa resident, died on Monday, September 15, 2008 at the Main Street Manor in Russell. She was born on October 12, 1911 in Yates Center , Kansas , the daughter of Franklin H. and Grace (Barrett) Parks.

As a young child, Doris was raised in the Yates Center area, and at age 7, she and her family moved to Ottawa . She graduated from Ottawa High School and later attended Ottawa University . She was united in marriage to Erwin Neal Elder on August 26, 1936 in Ottawa , and from this union they were blessed with a daughter Anne. Erwin preceded her in death on January 10, 1998. Doris was a devoted mother and homemaker, and was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa , the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and Franklin County Historical Society. She enjoyed a variety of activities such as golf, KU Basketball, Kansas City Chiefs football and Kansas City Royals baseball. She was very passionate about genealogy as well as her and Erwin’s monthly pot luck couples group. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her two grandchildren.

Surviving family include her daughter Anne Coady and husband Nick of Russell, Kansas and two grandchildren Kristen of Kansas City, Missouri and David Coady of Pittsburgh, Kansas; and brother in-law Vance Elder of Arkansas

She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother Barrett Parks.

A graveside service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, September 19, 2008 at the Highland Cemetery in Ottawa . Visitation in Russell will take place from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, September 17 th at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with family present to greet visitors from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Wednesday evening. Visitation in Ottawa will take place from Noon to 8 P.M. on Thursday, September 18 th at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home with family present from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Thursday evening. Memorials may be given to the Ottawa Public Library. Memorials and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary * 610 N. Maple * Russell , KS 67665 .
