Robert C. “Bob” McCobb, 73, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at his residence with his family by his side.
Bob was born April 13, 1947 in Russell, Kansas. He was one of three children born to Boyden and Doris M. (Marsh) McCobb. He grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the Class of ’65. Bob then served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. After his tour of duty, Bob was stationed at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, where he was united in marriage to Gertrude C. “Trudy” Scarborough on June 22, 1968. This union was blessed with two children; Scott and Caryn. After his discharge from the Army they lived in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, while Bob attended Bucks County Community College.
Bob and his family returned to Russell in 1974 to join his father Boyden in his Carrier Dealership. After Boyden’s death, Bob and his brother purchased the business in 1977 and were the owners and operators until 1980. After several positions Bob worked at the USPO in Hays, Kansas, when he was a member and Past President of the Postal Workers Union, retiring in 2004. Bob then answered a call to the ministry serving as a Lay Pastor at the Natoma and Pleasant Plains United Methodist Churches, retiring in 2010
Bob was a lifetime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was active serving on most committees throughout the years. He and Trudy sponsored Sr. High UMF, taught young and older adult Sunday School and Stephen Ministry classes. He was a member of the Russell VFW Post #6240, Russell Elks Lodge and served on the USD 407 School Board. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting when he was younger, watching K-State University Athletics and the Dallas Cowboys, running marathons and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Bob’s surviving family include his wife of 52 years, Trudy of the home; son, Scott McCobb (Donya) of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Caryn Carson (Thom) of Gretna, Nebraska; brother, Allan McCobb of Russell, Kansas; 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carolyn Mitchell.
Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 17, 2020 at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell. Burial of Ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery where the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. The family will be present to greet friends from 9:30 AM to service time at the church on Monday. Memorials have been established with DAV Advocacy for Vietnam Vets or Ronald McDonald House in Wichita, Kansas.
