Steve M. Wells, 59, of Olathe, KS died on September 19, 2024.  He came into this world kicking and screaming on August 12, 1965 at the Russell City Hospital, Russell, KS.   Steve is the son of Marion “Smokey” Lee Wells and Diana Lynn Mai (Milberger).  He was born and raised in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in 1983.  He went on to Salina Vo Tech for Auto Mechanics school to follow in his Grandpa Jake Milberger footsteps.  

Steve was united into marriage to Melinda Suzanne Keberlein on February 18, 1995 in Russell, KS.  He became very involved in the Russell community with spear heading the campaign to Keep the Dream Alive.  He retired as Captain for the Russell Fire Department after completing 26 years of service, worked for the City of Russell Waste Water department, and worked as a Waste Water Site Manager for Ecolab in Gardner, KS. 

Steve is survived by his wife Melinda, parents Diana and Mike Mai, mother Vicki Wells, grandmother Jean Mai, brothers, Tom Mai (Jessica), Stephen and Josh Wells (Sammi), sisters Morgan Covert (Ben) and Elizabeth Horton (Eric), his children, Lindsay Billiter (Jon), Bryan Hendrich (Brandi), Rachel Wells (Jason Wright), niece Jenny Wells, grandchildren, Cora, Peyton, Zaidyn, and Quintyn, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was proceeded into death by his father Marion “Smokey” Lee Wells, sister Annetta Wells, brother Rex Wells, maternal grandmother and grandfather Myrna and Jake Milberger, his paternal grandmother and grandfather Frank and Ester Wells, grandfather David Mai, and mother in law, Peggy Keberlein.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 24th from 9am-8pm at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler with family present from 6pm-8pm.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Russell Fire Department, Russell Dream Theatre, and/or Randi’s Rockin Dachshund Rescue, Leavenworth, KS.  Contributions and condolences may be sent to the Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.
