Sylvia Jo Hopkins

Sylvia Jo Hopkins, 85, of Salina, Kansas, and former Russell, Kansas, resident died on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at the Kenwood View Health and Rehab Center in Salina, Kansas.

Sylvia was born on December 07, 1938, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Marie and Lloyd Houdyshell.  She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1956.  She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Ronald George Hopkins on August 04, 1957, in Russell, Kansas.  From this union Sylvia and Ron were blessed with 3 children, George, Greg and Grant.  The family moved and made their home in Garden City in 1967, and Sylvia lived there for most of her adult life.  Later she moved to Mulvane, Kansas, for a short while then moved to Salina, Kansas, and live there for over 20 years.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was an avid reader and dedicated bridge player.  Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her sons George Hopkins and wife Lori of Garden City, Kansas, Greg Hopkins and wife Stephanie of Twinsburg, Ohio and Grant Hopkins of Wichita, Kansas; sisters Patricia Young and husband Wayne of Overland Park, Kansas; 5 grandchildren Mitchell, Matthew, Beau, Spencer and Erika and 3 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ronald on September 20, 2017, parents Marie and Lloyd Houdyshell, sister Virginia Scott and great grandson Toby Hopkins. Cremation has been selected by the family.  A memorial graveside service to celebrate Sylvia’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Russell City Cemetery in Russell, Kansas.  Family will greet guests before and after the graveside service.  Memorials may be given to the Kenwood View Health and Rehab Center of Salina, Kansas, and sent in care of the mortuary.  Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
